#3
Type : Transhipment Yard
Line : North Coast Line
Distance from Sydney : 978.743km
Location : -27.533445, 153.013406
Opened : 26th September 1930
Closed : n/a
Status : In use
Name meaning : After the location.
Notes : Up employee only platform was 2.13 metres in length. Clapham was the primary transhipment point for intersystem goods traffic between NSW and Queensland via the Kyogle line. The 1947 Working Timetable explicitly defines it: "Clapham — Transhipment station for goods to and from Queensland stations (other than Brisbane) and stations in Southern States. Not a passenger station nor a station for any other purpose than transhipping." Standard gauge (4ft 8½in) NSW wagons were unloaded at Clapham and goods transferred to 3ft 6in gauge Queensland wagons, or vice versa. A Standard Race for stock transhipment was provided from opening (14 cattle wagons or 14 sheep vans per movement without NSW engine). The crossing loop was opened **8 November 1944** when the Up Goods line was converted to a Crossing Loop (W.N. — 1944). NSW Reception Sidings (standard gauge) were established, with numbered transhipping sidings and various industrial sidings including Commonwealth Stores Petrol Siding, Evans Deakin & Co. Ltd. (Rocklea via Clapham), and later the Clapham Standard Gauge Line freight complex. The section **Clapham–Yeerongpilly** was abolished in 1982 when Yeerongpilly signal box closed and **Clapham–South Brisbane** was created. Single Line Track Block Working introduced on Clapham–South Brisbane in 1982, and on Acacia Ridge–Clapham also in 1982.

Clapham Signal Cabin (one of the last Double Wire Signal Systems in Brisbane).  It was a very busy hub in the 1980's when I was there, controlling NSW Loco Depot at Yeerongpilly (now the Aurizon Rail Welding Facility), fruit transhipping (prior to containerisation of fruit) and a scrap metal crane. The cabin is long gone and the yard is now being configured for Cross River Rail.

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1930–1989.*
*Note: Clapham was the last NSW-operated location on the North Coast Line before Queensland Railway territory. The 1947 definition — "not a passenger station nor a station for any other purpose than transhipping" — captures its essential function throughout its existence. Circular No. 390–19 of 1930 (Kyogle–Brisbane base diagram) was referenced at Clapham for 58 years, from opening in 1930 through to 1988.*
