Coffs Harbour to Grafton / Re: Braunstone

Braunstone, 31 January 2026. I came across this interesting low cost crossing warning system on the Grafton side of Braunstone, the like of which I haven't seen anywhere else. The green lights extinguish when a train is approaching (and a phone number is provided in the event the lights are out for an 'extended' period). Braunstone still has its crossing loop (lengthened for 1500 metre trains) but there is no sign of the former signal box. I believe Braunstone was used as a crew change location in lieu of Grafton at one time (during the late 90s) (Ken Date)

4468 & a 48 class on a down goods depart Wauchope loop after crossing an up train.
The take off for the trolley shed can be seen just in front of 4468.

4602 for Dorrigo in the siding at Raleigh which was also being used to drop off cement wagons for the highway upgrade at the time.

Raleigh, looking north. The former station was on the same side of the line as the CTC equipment building. (Ken Date)

The good's shed originally a G2 (36 x 16') however shortened in length at some point, my theory is the 5 ton gantry crane was removed and the goods shed and platform had their length reduced to make room for the curved siding into Taylors sawmill be interested to hear if this was the case. The solitary building was the pump house drawing water from the Karuah River supplying the water tank. The B&W shows the remains of the timber road over bridge which was being demolished now that the new concrete bridge is operational circa 1984 - my photos

Kungala, 31 January 2026. The CTC equipment building is located close to the site of the former signal box. The loop was extended at the southern end during the loop extension program of the mid-1990s. The settlement, such as it is, of Kungala is smaller today than I remember it from my previous visit, some decades ago. A family friend once taught at the one teacher school, but that school closed in 1977. School closures are their own topic - a bit like railway stations!

The northern end of the crossing loop. Note the 'telephone hut' at right. These were installed for CTC, which pre-dated mobile phones and widespread train radio systems. A flashing blue light was used to attract the attention of train crews if Train Control needed to communicate with them. I'm not sure if these huts are even still fitted with any equipment and I suspect those that remain are simply relics of the early CTC era.
