Taboon to Roma Street / Re: Glenapp
Last post by admin - Today at 12:09:29 PM
Signal box opened to control an Up and Down Main style crossing loop on the completion of the
Uniform Gauge line from Kyogle to Merivale St (South Brisbane). The loop was converted to a fully
interlocked Main and Loop style installation in 1944. At this time an extension 4 ft long was added
to the Sydney end of the building to accommodate the larger interlocking machine.
The signal box was closed with a signal rationalisation project between Casino and Glenapp as part
of a plan to install Train Orders. A new automatic loop was constructed at this location.
Queensland Railways constructed the signal box to their own design with the addition of an awning.

Although Glenapp signal box looked like a NSW Railways Type E, it was in fact a standard Queensland Railways timber signal box with the addition of an awning. The signal box was originally mounted on a cast concrete pit. The 1944 extension can be identified with the absence of a pit extension. No landing was provided. RT Taaffe

Collins Creek to Border Loop / Re: Border Loop

Signal box opened to control a key locked crossing loop on the completion of the Uniform Gauge
line from Kyogle to Merivale Street (South Brisbane). The loop was converted from a key locked type
to a fully interlocked loop in 1944 when a larger interlocking machine was installed.
The crossing loop was closed between 1 July 1987 and 13 March 1989 as part of an ill judged
rationalisation scheme.
The signal box was closed with a signal rationalisation project between Casino and Glenapp that also
saw the construction of two new long loops.

By 1991 the signal box was largely unchanged from when constructed. Insect screens had been added to windows and doors
and the fanlight over the front window had been covered. The residence and platform which stood to the right appear to have
been demolished after road access was provided for the signalmen in the 1970s. RT Taaffe

Collins Creek to Border Loop / Re: Loadstone
Last post by admin - Today at 12:04:53 PM
Signal box opened when the wartime loop was converted to a centrally operated fully interlocked
type. It was closed as part of a rationalisation programme but remained in situ for many years.
The building was erected reverse to normal and a small station type building was attached.
Weatherboard cladding was added to the front wall to reduce impact damage.

The third of the Type Q signal boxes constructed north of Casino for war traffic. Loadstone was unusual, being constructed reverse to normal. By the time this photograph was taken in 1979 someone had greater need for a  window and the boards along the front and on the platform but the signal box nameboard was intact. RT Taaffe

Collins Creek to Border Loop / Re: The Risk

The signalman (Michael Harley) was preparing to carry out a hand exchange of the Electric Staff with the Brisbane bound freight in 1971. The squat Type Q signal box, like Kyogle, had a signal box nameboard on the front wall even though it was on a passenger platform.

There were no protection boards below sill level on the front wall. RT Taaffe

Casino Meat Works Siding to Kyogle / Re: Kyogle
Last post by admin - Today at 12:00:22 PM
Signal box opened when the crossing loop was converted to a fully interlocked type.
It was closed when the safeworking and signalling between Casino and the Queensland border
was rationalised. A new automatic crossing loop was provided on the northern outskirts of Kyogle
and was designed for Train Order working. This conversion never happened and the new loop was
converted to CTC control.

A Type Q signal box constructed in the later years of World War Two after the transition from the Type P design. Maybe as an
economy move, the use of several boards only to protect the fibro is evident and possibly a move to save money. The provision of a nameboard on the signal box located on the passenger platform was unusual. RT Taaffe

Casino Meat Works Siding to Kyogle / Re: Fairy Hill

Signal box replaced an open-air frame when the crossing loop was converted to a fully interlocked
type.
It closed on the same day as Kyogle, The Risk and Border Loop and the new Kyogle Loop was opened.

A Type K0 signal box constructed after the completion of the standard gauge line to Brisbane. Having steps leading from both ways from the landing was unusual, that to the left obviously added later.

CASINO LOCOMOTIVE JUNCTION

Signal box opened when the new station was brought into use and controlled the country end
connections to the yard, and the connections to Loco.
It was operated as a subsidiary frame released from Casino Station Box, which exercised slotted
control on most of its signals.
Closed when the new large signal box was opened on the opposite side of the main line.

The signal box was located in the building to the left of the breezeway. Viewed looking from the Branch line to Main line side.
