Title: Mount Vernon Gates
Post by: admin on September 10, 2024, 09:36:43 AM
Type : Halt
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 32.688km
Opened : 1923
Closed : 29 September 1947
Status : Closed
Name meaning : After the associated property
Notes : This was a private passenger only siding and was a quarter of a mile north from Mount Vernon (32.688km from Brighton Junction).
It is doubtful that any facilities were ever built here apart from a simple platform, the formation of the line can still be seen within the property boundaries.
Private sidings and halts were common on other lines both within Tasmania and on the mainland, they usually served as cream platforms or as school platforms.
Private residence sidings (such as this one) were much rarer and were (usually) the result of a wealthy landholder petitioning the relevant railway authority to build it
