Title: Lemana Junction
Post by: admin on May 28, 2024, 01:46:41 PM
Type : Junction
Distance from Deloraine : 4.829km
Opened : Prior to 1890 (as Chudleigh Road), renamed Chudleigh Junction 5/4/1890 renamed Lemana Junction 1906
Closed : 1984
Status : Closed
Name meaning : Unknown
Notes : Lemana Junction station (alt. 241m) originally consisted of a passenger platform and building on the eastern side of the Western line and a goods loop and trailing dead end on the western side.

When the Mole Creek branch was built the passenger platform was moved to the east and an additional track was provided for the Western Line, the original Western Line becoming the branch for 1.1 km northwest-wards to the point at which the two routes actually diverged. Facing cross-overs were provided between the two lines at the western end of the station and in the 1940s the section of the branch running parallel with the Western Line was relaid with heavier rails so that it could be used as a refuge for goods trains hauled by Q class 4-8—2s and Australian Standard Garratts. By
1959, the facing crossover from the branch to the Western line had been moved several hundred metres north-westward to lengthen the crossing
loop.

The original station building was destroyed by fire in 1912-13 and replaced by a new weatherboard building. Metric distance posts (replacing the original mileage posts measured from Deloraine) were installed on the branch in 1982 with the 0 kilometre
post at the platform/centre road turnout at the Deloraine end of the yard.

The station survived to be one of the last combined stations and post offices in Tasmania but the station building and yard were both demolished after traffic on the branch ceased.
