The Pacific Coast Motorail arrives at Billinudgel, January 1990, in its final weeks of operation. I'm assuming the family on the platform is there to meet someone and they are not joining the train (no luggage, the bikes are obviously waiting to be ridden home). From Billinudgel it was possible to make a day return journey to Murwillumbah on this train, with a few hours available in town before the return leg. The replacement XPT timetable changed all of that and local travel on the branch seemed to be completely overlooked when the XPT schedule was developed. (Ken Date)

this pic from the mid 1980s is rather poor, spoiled by the nemesis of every photographer, a bank of cloud (in this case, to the west) arriving at an inappropriate time. Still, it does show Billinudgel station in the background, at which, from memory, the North Coast Overnight Express pulled up. At least I'd enjoyed a nice beer in the old pub there! (Chris Sim)
