The Murwillumbah branch should have closed in the 1970s as patronage ddeclined and freight traffic moved to trucks.
Throughout the 1980s it was known that the line was facing closure - as older rolling stock was removed the services were replaced with the XPT and patronage fell.
Even in 1986 attempts were being made to keep the line going (and failed due to lack of interest).
