*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1930–1949.*
*Note: Ballina was the most significant station on the branch and the only one formally staffed (with a Designated Person in Charge — POR, Porter in Charge) throughout most of its operational life. The Duplex Lock arrangement on Frame A (S.L. Keyhole, Annett Keys secured by S.L. Key) was more sophisticated than the simple Bracket Lock arrangements at Teven and Tyumba, reflecting Ballina's terminus status and its need to allow Guards to shunt during unattended periods. The Channel Bridge Bascule Span — requiring OTS key to unlock its Annett Lock and CTM authorisation for operation — was the most complex piece of infrastructure on the branch, with the winch handles in the Station-master's custody adding a further layer of control. The planned turntable (never constructed) confirms Ballina was designed for a higher level of locomotive operations than the branch ultimately achieved. The W.N. 3–1945 "To Pay" notice — issued after the branch had already been out of use for three years — suggests goods traffic was still being accepted at Ballina on an occasional ad hoc basis long after passenger services ended, with staff elsewhere continuing to book traffic incorrectly.*

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1940–1949.*
*Note: Miroma's station brand M.I.A. is unusual — typically three-letter brands are derived from the station name, but "MIR" would be the standard derivation from Miroma. The M.I.A. brand suggests either the station was initially proposed under a different name beginning with M.I.A., or the Department chose a non-standard derivation. The 24-foot (7.3-metre) platform is one of the shortest in the Ballina branch collection, shorter even than The Halt's 9-foot sleeper platform in area terms — though The Halt's platform length was the width of a single sleeper pair. Miroma was the last platform established on the Ballina branch before the wartime suspension, opening just over a year before the branch was put out of use in February 1942.*

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1930–1949.*
*Note: Teven's sugar cane tramway crossings (W.N. 33–1932 onwards) generated the most sustained series of local appendix entries for any Ballina branch location — revised in at least five separate WNs over 13 years. The tramway crossings were highly regulated (daylight only, written notice 3 clear days before use, Permanent-Way Ganger present, flagmen required, movable rails secured after each use) reflecting the serious risk of a tramway vehicle fouling the branch line. The conversion from loop to dead-end siding (W.N. 9–1942) — same notice as the Teven conversion noted alongside the simultaneous Tyumba conversion — confirms the two sidings were downgraded simultaneously as the branch was put out of use in February–March 1942. Teven's loop (11 trucks) was larger than Tyumba's, reflected in the separate conversion notice. The roadworks at Teven station site still visible in 2025 are consistent with the station's brief but complete infrastructure.*

## Summary of Key Events

| Date | Event |
|------|-------|
| **15 February 1942** | Ballina branch put out of use for regular passenger traffic |
| **May 1942** | **Nioka loading race opened** — 8-foot race; Down side; Mileage 537m 6c; Mr W. H. Jones; produce and fruit; siding and platform conditions; control Bexhill; Power's Ordinary **2899** (W.N. 21–1942) |

| **26 October 1949** | Branch formally abolished (W.N. 43–1949) |

---

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1942.*
*Note: Nioka is one of the few infrastructure additions to the Ballina branch made after the branch was put out of use for passenger traffic. Its establishment in 1942 — when the branch was already effectively closed — reflects the continued importance of produce haulage to local farmers even after wartime suspension of regular services. The naming after the Nioka stud farm (operational until 1990) provides an unusually precise end-date for the property that generated the siding's creation.*

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1930–1949.*
*Note: Tyumba's station brand change from TYW to TYU (W.N. 21–1937) is unusual — the original brand TYW appears to have conflicted with another station or was simply corrected to better reflect the station name. The 1936 pig race notation ("Pig Race on Main line") is significant — a race on the main line rather than in a yard siding is an unusual arrangement for a small branch station, reflecting the limited infrastructure at Tyumba. The Nioka loading race (W.N. 21–1942), established simultaneously with the branch being put out of use for passenger traffic, suggests some continued use of the branch for produce loading even after passenger suspension — the loading race for Mr. W. H. Jones was clearly expected to generate traffic independently of the regular train service.*

**Grade:** 1 in 50 rising and falling (W.N. 19–1940)

### Note on Kirklands Pre-Opening Period
Before the formal platform was provided (March 1940), the location was known locally as **Kirklands** after the Kirkland property it served. Mixed trains Nos. 43 and 44 stopped here from **3 February 1939** to pick up and set down school children for Lismore — officially at Mileage **533m 46c** (OCR of W.N. 3–1939 reads "553m 38c" — likely OCR error; the 1940 W.N. 14 clearly gives 533m 46c for the same location). The stop predated the formal platform by approximately 13 months.

### Power's Freight Accounting
**Ordinary traffic code: 2944** — W.N. 14–1940 (ref. 39–34,678)

---

> **Notes:** The Halt formally opened March 1940 (W.N. 14–1940; ref. 39–34,678) with a 9-foot Up side sleeper platform at Mileage 533m 46c between Booyong Junction and Tyumba; Station Brand THT; Station Distinguishing Number BB5; unattended; control Bexhill; freight prepaid; Ordinary code 2944. The location had been known as Kirklands and was used as an informal school children pick-up/set-down point from 3 February 1939 (W.N. 3–1939) — Nos. 43 and 44 Mixed trains stopped Mondays to Fridays. Grade 1 in 50 rising and falling (W.N. 19–1940). The Ballina branch was put out of use 15 February 1942; The Halt closed 12 January 1949 (per your notes). After branch closure, the W.N. 13–1949 notice stated traffic must not be booked to The Halt, Tyumba, Teven, Miroma and Ballina.

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1939–1949.*
*Note: The Halt has one of the most unusual pre-opening histories in the Murwillumbah/Ballina collection — confirmed use as a school children stop for 13 months before the formal platform was gazetted. The W.N. 3–1939 entry (Nos. 43 and 44 Mixed) predating the W.N. 14–1940 formal provision notice is rare documented evidence of informal train stops preceding formal platform establishment. The location's local name "Kirklands" (still in use as of 2025) preserves the property name that the Department never officially adopted. The 9-foot (approximately 2.7-metre) sleeper platform is the shortest documented platform in the Murwillumbah/Ballina branch collection — little more than a single sleeper-length boarding point.*

### Platform and Siding

**Siding (removed):** **105-foot dead-end siding** — **Down side** of line; removed 8 September 1903 (per your notes)
**Always a request stop** — never a timetabled stop; likely served local farms

A 105-foot Down side siding was removed 8 September 1903. The platform was damaged in a fire in 1923. Listed as Talofa (P) — unattended platform — in 1924 between Bangalow and St Helena (P). *Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1924–1975.*
*Note: Talofa's name — a Samoan greeting — is unique in the NSW railway network, likely reflecting a connection to the Pacific through the property owner. The request-only status throughout its documented life, early siding removal (1903) and 1923 fire damage suggest a facility that was always marginal.*

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1894–1986.*
*Note: Bangalow's 1986 closure as a crossing loop (rather than as a station) is unusual — the station building and passenger facilities remained in use until 1990, with the line reverting to a single-staff section Lismore–Byron Bay. The four simultaneous circular amendments on 4 March 1986 (507–57 Lismore, 576–56 Lismore–Byron Bay, 500–50 Bangalow, and 548–31 Byron Bay) parallel the four circular amendments at Booyong's 1957 closure — the Murwillumbah branch's characteristic pattern of cascading circular amendments when a crossing station closes. The Loop line renamed "Goods Siding" with new catchpoints but no staff key release (Frames B and E remain with receptacle key access) represents a transitional status — Bangalow was effectively demoted from a crossing station to an intermediate siding while still remaining an attended station. The Heart-shaped Green staff for the new Lismore–Byron Bay section is the same staff type used for the Lismore–Bangalow section created after the 1973 Bexhill closure.*

# Buckley's Siding (Murwillumbah Branch)
## Entries from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1896–1913

---

**Type:** Siding / Platform (Closed)
**Line:** Murwillumbah Branch (Casino–Murwillumbah; between Booyong and Bangalow)
**Distance from Sydney:** 858.158 km (Mileage approximately **4m 21c from Bangalow** — per 1913 closure notice)
**Location:** -28.747568, 153.440413
**Between:** Booyong (south/west) and Bangalow (north/east)
**Opened:** **1896** (per your notes; no WN opening notice found in OCR)
**Small platform and waiting shed added:** **1900** (per your notes)
**Closed:** **By 19 July 1913** — W.N. 29–1913 (ref. 13–24,151)
**Status:** Closed
**Name meaning:** Named after the Buckley family property it was associated with (property still owned by the Buckley family per your notes)

### Siding Characteristics
**Original purpose:** Sugar cane siding (per your notes)
**Siding:** **132-foot dead-end siding** — **Up side** of Main line
**Platform and waiting shed:** **Down side** of Main line (added 1900)

### Closure Notice (W.N. 29–1913)
> "Buckley's Siding (Grafton-Tweed Line) — The Siding at Mileage **4[m] 21[c]**, between Booyong and Bangalow, has been closed." (13–24,151.)

*Note: OCR reads "Mileage 4%-21" — the "%" is an OCR artefact; the mileage is interpreted as 4 miles 21 chains from [the relevant reference point], consistent with the 858.158 km distance.*

---

> **Notes:** Buckley's Siding opened 1896 as a sugar cane siding on the Up side of the line between Booyong and Bangalow. A small Down side platform and waiting shed were added in 1900. Closed by 19 July 1913 (W.N. 29–1913; ref. 13–24,151) — the same WN that commissioned the full interlocking arrangements at Bexhill (Circular No. 188 of 1913). No WN opening notice found in the OCR collection. The Buckley family property is still in the same ownership per your notes.

---

## 1913 — Siding Closed — W.N. 29–1913

### Siding Closed — W.N. 29–1913
> **Buckley's Siding (Grafton-Tweed Line)** — The Siding at Mileage **4m 21c**, between Booyong and Bangalow, has been closed. (13–24,151.) *(W.N. 29–1913)*

---

## Summary of Key Events

| Date | Event |
|------|-------|
| **1896** | **Opened** — Up side 132-foot dead-end siding; sugar cane purposes (per your notes; no WN opening notice found) |
| **1900** | **Platform and waiting shed added** — Down side of Main line (per your notes) |
| **By 19 July 1913** | **Siding closed** — Mileage 4m 21c between Booyong and Bangalow (W.N. 29–1913; ref. 13–24,151) |

---

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1913.*
*Note: Buckley's Siding closure in W.N. 29–1913 appeared alongside the commissioning of Bexhill interlocking (Circular No. 188) and the withdrawal of a Guard-worked crossing arrangement at another location — suggesting July 1913 was a period of general infrastructure rationalisation on the Murwillumbah branch. The 17-year life of the platform and shed (1900–1913) without any intermediate WN entries is consistent with a small private siding serving a single property with no goods or public traffic changes requiring formal gazette notice.*

*Extracted from NSW Government Railways Weekly Notices, 1894–1972.*
*Note: Binna Burra's naming history spans three names — Garvan's Siding (1894), Binna Burra (1896), and the unofficial compound history of the Creamery/Binna Burra Co-operative Dairy/Norco siding (1913–1950). The station's two platform locations (original Down side 73.4 metres; replaced October 1913 by 34.4-metre Up side) make it one of the few Murwillumbah branch stations with a fully documented platform relocation. The Norco siding history (14 March 1913 creamery opening → 1926 Norco renaming → 22 September 1949 abolition → W.N. 7–1950 final deletion) is the most completely documented private dairy siding in the Murwillumbah branch collection, with a 36-year operational life. The W.N. 16–1972 notice — "the platform at Binna Burra ... has been removed" — is the second documented platform removal (past tense) in the collection, alongside the South Casino notice in 1974. Your note that "platform remains still visible" is consistent with the 1972 notice referring to the built platform structure being removed while the formation remains.*

*Note: Nashua's 1896 opening predates the WN OCR collection's reliable coverage of the Murwillumbah branch northern extensions. The station appears in the 1924 working timetable as a full scheduled stop (3-minute dwell), not a request stop — suggesting it had reasonable traffic at that time. By 1935 the asterisk designation (\*) indicates it had become a limited-service or unattended stop. The 1957 power's codes change (3445–59 → 3450–55) and simultaneous Lismore control assignment reflect the same four-station rationalisation that affected Booyong, Eltham and Laureldale. The closure date (17 March 1972) makes Nashua one of the earlier 1972 closures on the Murwillumbah branch — preceding the larger February 1972 batch (Fernside, Laureldale, Tyagarah etc.) in the opposite direction.*

Looking towards the site of the on-time station at Nashua on the Murwillumbah branch in 2025.
