Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Bothwell
September 18, 2024, 07:42:17 AM
Type : Station
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : Unknown
Opened : Proposed, never opened
Closed : Proposed, never opened
Status : Proposed, never opened
Name meaning : After Bothwell in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Notes : The intent had always been to extend the line to Bothwell – it is an academic exercise to suppose that this may have been a factor that would have made the line more profitable and kept it open longer.
Surveys of the line were undertaken, however.

Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Apsley
September 18, 2024, 07:29:33 AM
Type : Station
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 42.300km
Opened : 22 April 1891
Closed : 29 September 1947
Status : Closed
Name meaning : Unknown
Notes : Aspley was the terminus of the line (despite sporadic plans to extend it further to Bothwell). An isolated and small locality even now, it was more-so during the lifetime of the line and even up until near the end of the railway it remained quite small with the railway facilities being a major part of the village.
There were four cottages provided for railway staff, an overhead goods shed opposite the station building (similar to that in Kempton), a station building that was of a similar design to those on the rest of the line, although the station was sited on the Down side loop. The goods shed was located on the Up side loop and the mainline ran between both loops with a crossover situated near the stockyards (this was on a spur that extended off the goods loop). The main line ended at a dead end with a crossing to the carriage shed spur.  On the Up side was a spur leading to a 45' turntable (the second, and largest, on the line), an ash pit, a coal stage, a raised iron water tank and an engine shed constructed from corrugated iron that could hold one locomotive.
After 1930 (with the cessation of regular passenger services) the carriage shed was demolished and the Down loop truncated.
Intending passengers from Bothwell needed to catch a stage coach (initially) that connected with the trains, by 1916 this had been changed to a motor omnibus.
The station gained importance and was busy during the construction of Waddamana B hydro-electric power station from 1939 as construction material was delivered to Aspley and then trucked to the building site.

Type : Halt
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 38.629km
Opened : Unknown

Name meaning : Probably after the landholder
Notes : This was a private halt located 5 metres to the Down side of the location known as
"Water Tank".

Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Water Tank
September 14, 2024, 07:18:37 AM
Type : Tank
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 38.624km
Opened : 1920
Closed : Unknown, likely with the line
Status : Closed
Name meaning : n/a
Notes : Near to the 24 mile mark (38.624km) a corrugated iron tank was erected in 1920 that was supplied by a pump from the nearby Jordan River to allowed steam engines to be watered.
This was the only place on the line between Dysart and Aspley that water could be reliably obtained.
Use of corrugated tanks for water facilities on the Tasmanian railways was common, particularly on minor branch lines that it was not cost effective to construct a full blown cast iron, timber or steel tank.

Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Wylie's
September 13, 2024, 08:13:08 AM
Type : Halt
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 37.417km
Opened : 1921 (as Melton Vale), renamed Wylie's in 1928
Closed : Unknown
Status : Closed
Name meaning : After the property owner
Notes : Located at 23 and a quarter miles (37.417km), this was a stopping place that first appeared in 1921 as Melton Vale, being renamed in 1928 to Wylie's.
It was very likely a halt that served a local property owned by one D. Wylie who also owned other land in the area, and it is believed to have had a small sleeper and rammed earth platform on the Up side of the line.

Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Melton
September 12, 2024, 07:09:31 AM
Type : Station
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 33.856km
Opened : 22 April 1891
Closed : 29 September 1947
Status : Closed
Name meaning : After the location (Melton Mowbray)
Notes : The location had a timber station similar to that at Pontville located on the Up side; this was later replaced by a simple shelter.
Facilities included a Down side loop siding with a 30' by 20' corrugated iron goods shed with a timber platform and loading ramp.  A short spur led to stockyard with a loading ramp and cattle and sheep pens. Housing for railway employees existed on the site.

Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Mount Vernon Gates
September 10, 2024, 09:36:43 AM
Type : Halt
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 32.688km
Opened : 1923
Closed : 29 September 1947
Status : Closed
Name meaning : After the associated property
Notes : This was a private passenger only siding and was a quarter of a mile north from Mount Vernon (32.688km from Brighton Junction).
It is doubtful that any facilities were ever built here apart from a simple platform, the formation of the line can still be seen within the property boundaries.
Private sidings and halts were common on other lines both within Tasmania and on the mainland, they usually served as cream platforms or as school platforms.
Private residence sidings (such as this one) were much rarer and were (usually) the result of a wealthy landholder petitioning the relevant railway authority to build it

Apsley Line (Green Ponds Line) / Mount Vernon
September 10, 2024, 06:59:09 AM
Type : Siding
Line : Apsley Branch
Distance from Brighton Junction : 32.286km
Opened : 1927
Closed : 29 September 1947
Status : Closed
Name meaning : After the associated property
Notes : Also referred to as "Mount Vernon Siding"
Located at 20 miles and 5 chains (32.286km) from Brighton, this site was a late addition to the line having only been constructed in 1927. The location had a facing 163' dead end siding on the Up side that serviced a stockyard. Passengers were picked up and dropped off here by request, but no station facilities were provided.
Separate sheep and cattle races were provided. The location was one that was requested to be kept open for trucking after the line closed.

Not to be confused with Mount Vernon Gates
